Promoting Honeybee Nutrition, Biodiversity Conservation, Family Nutrition and Sustainable Livelihoods
Under the project titled “Environment-Friendly Beekeeping for Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystem Restoration in Bangladesh,” BASA Foundation, with support from Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), has successfully distributed 46,125 bee-friendly saplings among 1,075 beekeepers across 36 upazilas in 10 beekeeping-potential districts of Bangladesh.
The initiative covers three hill districts, where 725 beekeepers received 28,275 saplings across 16 upazilas, and seven plain land districts, where 350 beekeepers received 17,850 saplings across 20 upazilas.
The distributed species include fruit-bearing, medicinal and flowering plants such as Moringa, lemon, coconut, guava, Indian jujube, olive, tamarind, jarul, hibiscus, star fruit, pomegranate, papaya and Indian gooseberry.
The initiative aims to address seasonal floral scarcity by increasing natural sources of nectar and pollen for honeybees. Once established, these plants are expected to support healthier bee colonies, reduce dependence on supplementary feeding and lower beekeeping maintenance costs.
Beyond supporting beekeeping, fruit-bearing trees will contribute to improved household nutrition and create opportunities for additional income through surplus fruit sales. The plantation will also promote pollination, biodiversity conservation, vegetation coverage and ecosystem restoration.
Through this nature-based intervention, BASA Foundation aims to strengthen rural livelihoods, promote environmental sustainability and build a more resilient beekeeping sector in Bangladesh.
BASA Foundation gratefully acknowledges Standard Chartered Bank for its support and appreciates the active participation of the beekeepers in making this initiative successful.
One sapling means a future food source. More trees mean more bees, better nutrition, greater income opportunities and more sustainable beekeeping.
